Alter Ratio is a school of alternative performance: flexible and agile, ready for everything new in the field of solo and choral singing, open to composer’s and director’s audacious experiments.
The ensemble’s mission consists in raising awareness of the wide audience on the best examples of academic music of the 20th-21st centuries, fostering the development and promotion of new Ukrainian academic music. The main direction of the ensemble’s activity is cooperation with contemporary composers and promoting their works.
The ensemble is a member of national and international festivals: GOGOLFest (Kyiv), Kyiv Music Fest, Contrasts (Lviv), Contemporary Music Days in Vinnytsia, forum Donkult (Kyiv), New Music Festival on Book Arsenal (Kyiv), Architecture of Voice (Kyiv), International Easter Assembly (Kyiv), All-Ukrainian Festival of Chamber Choir Performing named by V. Ikonnik (Kyiv) etc. Also takes part in various projects Dim MK (art and education), Mystetskyi Arsenal, the musical agency Ukho. Alter Ratio collaborated with different international culture organisations—British Council, Goethe-Institut, America House.
With the support of the British Council, the ensemble has created a special project The Night of Intrigue at Mystetskyi Arsenal (Kyiv, Ukraine). With the support of the United States Embassy in Ukraine Alter Ratio and Meredith Monk/The House Foundation for the Arts presented a joint Ukrainian-American project, A Celebration Service (Meredith Monk).
In 2019 ensemble took part in Austria-Ukraine culture year with project Mariologia (Austria, Wien, Votivkirche) and in Ukrainian week in Gdansk IV (Poland, Gdansk, The Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre) with performance The little match girl passion.
The ensemble collaborated with such musicians and teams as Tom Bogdan and Allison Easter (a long-time member of Monk's vocal ensemble, US), conductor and composer Johannes Scholhorn (DE), conductor Luigi Gaggero (IT), conductor Mikheil Menabde (GE/UA/AT), singer Nazgulya Shukaeva (UA), singer Tetiana Zhuravel (UA), singer Susana Karpenko (UA), Ukho-ensemble (UA), Sed contra ensemble (UA), New Era Orchestra (UA), chamber orchestra Armonia Ludus (UA) and others.
The ensemble took part in many international festivals of academic music and was the winner of the Grand Prix of the Victoria International Contest. In 2013−2014, Alter Ratio released a CD of works by Svyatoslav Lunyov The Noel Consort (a concert for the choir based on traditional carols). In 2017 the ensemble released CD Mariologia with pieces by four Ukrainian composers —Maxim Kolomiiets (UA), Svyatoslav Lunyov (UA), Alexey Retinsky (UA/AT) and Maxim Shalygin (UA/NL).
